Physical GTMOutbound

I'm sending cakes to 10 dev tool companies (and how to add a cake to any outbound sequence)

Physical GTM means sending a real gift as one step of your outbound. I picked the 10 dev tool companies I most want as customers, and each is getting emails, LinkedIn messages and a cake with their name on it. Here's how the cake step works in a PumpGTM sequence.

Physical GTM is sending something real, like a cake, as one step of an outbound sequence. Your top prospects get the same cold emails and LinkedIn messages as everyone else's. A cake on their desk with their name on it is the one touch they actually remember.

So I made a list of the 10 dev tool companies I most want as customers. Every one of them is getting automated emails, LinkedIn messages and a literal cake delivered to their office. Here's how that works, and how you can add a cake step to your own sequence.

Why a cake, and why only for 10 companies

We're really good at GTM for dev tool companies, so that's who I want as customers. The list came from our own ranking of dev tool companies by X followers: Deno, Cline, Resend and seven more.

A cake costs more than an email, so it doesn't belong in a 3,000-person sequence. It belongs in the sequence for your highest-value accounts. That's the whole idea: segment your list, and give the few accounts that matter most something nobody else is sending them.

Step 1: design the cake once

The cake studio in PumpGTM lets you upload an image, drag it into place and add text on top. The part I like most is personalization: put {{firstName}} on the cake and every person in the sequence gets a cake with their own name printed on it. You can change the shape, size, colors and fonts too.

Step 2: add "Send a cake" to the sequence

In the sequence editor, I run LinkedIn, email and X in parallel, so each person hears from me in a few places. (If you haven't run multi-channel outbound yet, start there. One channel misses most people.)

Then I add a Send a cake step and pick the design. The step only runs for people who haven't replied, and you set the bakery lead time. Before anything is bought, PumpGTM checks for a reply one more time. A reply stops an unpaid order.

PumpGTM also needs a confirmed delivery address for each person. If one is missing, that person waits for you and everyone else keeps moving.

Step 3: follow up when it's ordered

The follow-up message goes out after the order is confirmed: Hi {{firstName}}, I've arranged a little cake for you and the team. Hope it brings some joy to your week! It lands while the cake is on its way, which is a much better opener than a third "bumping this up" email.

Will it work?

I'm sending messages and cakes to these 10 companies now. Let's see if they sign up.

Questions founders ask

What is physical GTM? Sending a real, physical gift (like a cake) to a prospect as one step of your outbound sequence, alongside emails and messages, so the people you most want to reach remember you.

Can I send a cake automatically as part of an outbound sequence? Yes. In PumpGTM you add a Send a cake step to a sequence, pick a design, and it goes to each person who hasn't replied once their delivery address is confirmed. The follow-up message goes out after the order is confirmed.

Can I put the prospect's name on the cake? Yes. Add {{firstName}} to the cake design and each person gets their own name printed on it, on top of a photo, logo or plain text.

What happens if the prospect replies before the cake is sent? The cake step only runs for people who haven't replied, and PumpGTM checks again right before ordering. A reply stops an unpaid order.

Who should get a cake? Your highest-value accounts. A cake costs more than an email, so segment your list and save it for the handful of companies you most want as customers.
