What is an AI SDR? A plain explanation for founders

An AI SDR does the sales development rep's daily job in software: find buyers showing intent, write and send the first message, and surface the replies that matter. Here's what it is, what it can't do, and how to tell a real one from a glorified mail-merge.

If you've started looking at outbound tools, you've seen the term "AI SDR" on every second site. It's worth knowing what it actually means before you pay for one, because the label gets stuck on everything from a genuine agent to a cold-email tool with a chatbot bolted on.

The short answer

An AI SDR is software that does the daily job of a sales development rep: find people who are a fit and showing buying intent right now, write a personal first message to each, send it from your accounts, and sort the replies so you only see the ones worth a call. "SDR" is the entry sales role that fills the top of the funnel; the "AI" part means that finding, writing and sending happen automatically, with you approving and closing.

A real AI SDR removes the repetitive hours. It does not replace the human parts of selling, the discovery call, the hard objection, the relationship.

What an AI SDR actually does, step by step

  1. Finds buyers. It watches for signals that someone is in-market now: hiring for a role you sell into, raising money, changing tools, or engaging with the right posts. That beats blasting a static list.
  2. Scores and filters. It ranks each lead against your ideal customer so your effort goes to people who can actually buy, not everyone with a matching job title.
  3. Writes a first message per person. Not one template with a merged first name. A specific opener tied to why that person showed up now.
  4. Sends from your own accounts. From your LinkedIn, your email, your X, in a paced sequence, so replies land in your inbox and build your relationship instead of a vendor's.
  5. Surfaces the replies that matter. It sorts responses and hands you the qualified ones so you spend your time on calls, not triage.

What it is not

It is not a mail-merge that sends 9,000 identical messages. It is not an auto-pilot that books meetings while you never read a thread, at least not one you'd want running your reputation. And it is not a 200-million-contact database with a send button. The value is in the targeting and the per-person first touch, not the volume.

A useful test: if the "AI" only writes copy and can't decide who to contact or when, it's an email tool with an AI feature, not an AI SDR.

How to pick one

The things that separate a real AI SDR from a wrapper:

  • Approval before send. A score gate or a draft that waits for you, so nothing goes out that you'd be embarrassed by.
  • Your own accounts, not rented domains. Every reply should belong to you and stay with you if you switch tools.
  • Month to month, transparent price. If the price is "talk to sales" and the contract is a year, that's a mid-market product, not a founder's first tool.
  • You can drive it from your AI. The newest ones run as an MCP server, so you operate the whole thing from Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT instead of learning another dashboard.

Should your first sales hire be one?

Often, yes, before a human. An AI SDR runs at around $75 a month and is productive the day you connect it, where a human SDR averages near $80,000 a year all-in and takes about three months to ramp (Bridge Group's SDR report). The smart order is to prove a repeatable message with an AI SDR first, then hire a human to pour into what's already working. The full case is in your first sales hire: human SDR or AI SDR.

The way we built PumpGTM, you copy a prompt, connect it to your AI, and it finds buyers and drafts the first messages for you to approve. If you want to try it on your own product, start the 7 day trial.

Questions people ask

What does AI SDR stand for? AI sales development representative. An SDR is the role that finds and qualifies new buyers at the top of the funnel; an AI SDR does that job in software while you approve and close.

Is an AI SDR the same as cold email automation? No. Cold email automation sends sequences you set up. An AI SDR also decides who to contact and when, based on live buying signals, and writes a message specific to each person.

Can an AI SDR use LinkedIn, not just email? The good ones do. Reaching the same buyer across LinkedIn, email and X in one sequence lifts reply rates, since any single channel misses people. More on that in the multi-channel outbound playbook.

How much does an AI SDR cost? Founder-priced options run roughly $75 to $99 a month, far below a human SDR's ~$80,000 a year all-in. Enterprise AI SDRs can start in the thousands per month on annual contracts.

Does an AI SDR replace human salespeople? No. It removes the repetitive top-of-funnel work (finding buyers, first touches, reply triage) so your humans spend their time on calls and closing.
