Apollo alternatives when the database is the problem

Six Apollo.io alternatives compared on price, channels, credit metering and MCP as of September 2026. Bounce rates, credit burn, and where Apollo still wins.

You exported 500 "verified" contacts from Apollo.io on Monday, loaded them into a sequence, and by Tuesday morning 18 percent had hard bounced. Your domain reputation took the hit, not Apollo's. Later that week the export credits ran out three weeks into the cycle, and support answered with a bot email. If that is your month, you are the person searching for Apollo alternatives, and this page is for you.

I run PumpGTM, which is on the list below and which is not a database. Every number here is from the vendors' own pricing pages or public reviews, checked September 15, 2026. Where Apollo is still the right pick, I say so.

What Apollo does well

Apollo.io is a B2B contact database (240M+ contacts, 30M+ companies) with email sequences, a dialer and LinkedIn task reminders in the same seat. For a small US-focused sales team, that is a lot in one place. Capterra reviewers call it cheaper than ZoomInfo for comparable coverage and praise the filters and the Chrome extension that pulls data off LinkedIn. G2 has it at 4.7 across 9,696 reviews, which is more reviews than every other tool on this page combined.

The pricing is not extreme. Basic is $59 per user monthly, Professional $99, Organization $149 (3 seat minimum), as of September 2026, with a free plan that never expires. CRM sync with Salesforce and HubSpot starts on Basic. The MCP server is official, remote at mcp.apollo.io, OAuth or API key, 40+ tools, and it costs nothing extra on any plan.

If you need a big searchable database with email sequencing attached, and you are willing to re-verify before you send, Apollo remains a sensible buy.

When to look elsewhere

Three complaints dominate.

Data accuracy. 503 G2 reviews flag inaccurate data. r/coldemail users report 18 percent hard bounces on day one from verified exports, and 32 to 38 percent in a 500 to 1,000 lead test. The community consensus is to re-verify with a second tool, which means paying twice. Phone data is weaker than email. Capterra: "some contact information is outdated and credit can runs out quickly with heavy usage."

Credits. Every export consumes a credit (email 1, phone lookup 8). Monthly caps are 1,000 on Basic, 2,000 on Professional, 4,000 on Organization. Paid "unlimited" plans are actually capped at the lesser of dollars paid divided by $0.025 or one million credits a year.

Experience and support. Trustpilot is 3.1 across 1,308 reviews. "UX is very bad.. heavy loading pages to many windows with slow loading." Support "keep sending a BOT email." And LinkedIn steps are reminders you complete by hand, not automation, so if LinkedIn is your channel Apollo does very little for you.

There is also the privacy angle. "They've scraped my info together and put it in their database," as one Reddit user wrote. Some of your prospects feel the same way about the email you just sent them.

The alternatives

PumpGTM

PumpGTM is an AI go-to-market engine for founders and small B2B sales teams. It does not sell you a database. It builds a list from live intent signals (hiring on Greenhouse, Lever or LinkedIn Jobs, funding, tooling changes, LinkedIn post engagement), scores every lead, and runs a paced LinkedIn sequence from your own account with optional email from your own Gmail, Microsoft 365 or IMAP mailbox.

Price as of September 2026: Pro is $75 a month (list $99) for up to 3,000 leads a month, extra users $25 each, 7 day trial, month to month. Fits a founder or 1 to 4 person team selling to people who are active on LinkedIn. Weakness: launched September 2026, no dialer, no phone data, and you cannot type "VP Sales, fintech, Texas" and get 40,000 rows back. Full introduction below.

Clay

A spreadsheet-style GTM data tool that enriches leads by querying many vendors in a waterfall, runs AI research (Claygent), and pushes to your CRM or sequencer. Free tier exists; Launch is $185 a month monthly ($167 annual) for 15,000 actions and 2,500 data credits, Growth $495, as of September 2026. Fits a RevOps or growth team with someone technical who will build and babysit workflows. Weakness: credit burn. 42 percent of negative reviews mention it, one user "spent $800 in a week while learning," and a $350 a month customer was told to "ask your LLM for help debugging." Trustpilot is 2.7. Clay does not send LinkedIn messages. The head to head is at /vs/apollo-vs-clay.

Lemlist

Multichannel outreach with its own 650M+ database, email and phone finder, LinkedIn steps, SMS, WhatsApp, a dialer and lemwarm warm-up. Email plan $69 a month, Multichannel $109, as of September 2026. Fits small teams that want Apollo's shape (data plus sequences) with LinkedIn automation added. Weakness: the same credit pattern. Verification is 5 credits, a phone number 20, charged even when nothing is found, with 96 G2 mentions of data inaccuracy. Reporting is called "literally unusable" by one Capterra reviewer.

Instantly

Cold email at volume, with a 450M+ lead database sold as a separate credit product. Growth is $47 a month for 5,000 emails, Hypergrowth $97 for 125,000, as of September 2026, unlimited mailboxes and warm-up on every plan. Fits agencies and teams whose entire channel is email. Weakness: email only, and the database has the same complaint as Apollo's: "outdated emails, wrong titles, and high bounce rates." Trustpilot's rating is suppressed after fake reviews were removed, with 25 percent one-star remaining. Support is described as AI-bot only.

Gojiberry

An AI outbound agent that watches LinkedIn signals (post engagers, competitor followers, job changes, hiring, funding), scores against your ICP, and sends LinkedIn plus email. Pro is $99 a month as of September 2026 for 2 AI agents and up to 1,800 prospects contacted. Fits a founder or tiny team that sells to people active on LinkedIn. Weakness: capped at two senders, scoring is "a black box you can't tune," no Salesforce, and recent Trustpilot one-stars mention charges after cancellation. Our three-way with Gojiberry is at /blog/gojiberry-vs-pumpgtm-vs-okara-ai-outreach-tools.

LinkedIn Sales Navigator

LinkedIn's own prospecting search. It is not an outreach tool and it does not sell email addresses; it is the most current source of who holds which job, because people update their own profiles. Almost every LinkedIn automation tool on this site imports from it (HeyReach, Expandi, Waalaxy, Dripify, La Growth Machine and PumpGTM all do). Fits anyone whose buyers live on LinkedIn. Weakness: no sending, no sequences, no email data, and getting a list out takes work; our walkthrough is at /guides/export-leads-from-sales-navigator. Pricing lives on LinkedIn's site and is not covered here.

How PumpGTM is different

PumpGTM finds the buyers who are showing intent this week and runs the LinkedIn conversation for you, from your own account, until someone qualified replies.

Apollo starts with a filter over a static database. PumpGTM starts with an event. Step one: it watches for a Greenhouse or Lever posting for the role you sell to, a funding announcement, a tooling change, or engagement on a relevant LinkedIn post, and builds the list from that. It also takes a Sales Navigator import. Step two: it scores every lead out of 100 and skips anyone under 60, so the list you message is short and current instead of long and stale (more at /blog/linkedin-lead-scoring-before-outreach). Step three: it runs a paced sequence from your own account: day 0 profile view, day 1 like a relevant post, day 2 personalized connection request, then a contextual follow-up, with optional email from your own mailbox. Replies are sorted and the qualified ones come to you.

The bounce problem mostly disappears because the first touch is a LinkedIn profile that exists today, not an email address that was verified eight months ago.

Proof from one San Francisco team over the last 7 days in September 2026: 546 invites sent, 356 accepted (68 percent against roughly 20 percent industry standard), 98 qualified replies, 38 enterprise demo meetings booked. We run GTM for 10+ YC companies. Dhravya Shah at Supermemory: "PumpGTM found exactly the right leads for my business and reaches out to them, automatically."

Like Apollo, it runs as an MCP server (mcp.gigacatalyst.com, OAuth) for Claude, Cursor and Codex. The AI client can find buyers, draft and send LinkedIn messages, and read replies. Details at /mcp.

The honest limits. We launched in September 2026. No dialer, no phone numbers, no SMS. No searchable 240M database; if you need bulk contact data, Apollo or Clay is the right tool. No multi-inbox warm-up farm, so heavy email volume belongs with Instantly. Pricing and the 7 day trial are at /.

Questions people ask

Is Apollo.io data accurate? Reviewers say it varies. 503 G2 reviews flag inaccurate data, and r/coldemail users report 18 percent day-one bounces from verified exports. Email is more reliable than phone. Most heavy users re-verify with a second tool before sending.

What is the cheapest Apollo alternative? Apollo's own free plan, honestly, if 10 export credits a month is enough. Among paid tools, Instantly Growth at $47 for email only and PumpGTM Pro at $75 for LinkedIn plus email, both as of September 2026.

Which Apollo alternative automates LinkedIn? Apollo's LinkedIn steps are manual reminders. Lemlist (Multichannel plan), Gojiberry and PumpGTM automate LinkedIn actions. Clay and Instantly do not touch LinkedIn.

Should I move from Apollo to Clay? Only if someone on your team will build and maintain enrichment workflows and you already own a sequencer. Clay's waterfall lifts match rates, but the credit burn and learning curve are the two most repeated complaints. The full comparison is at /vs/apollo-vs-clay.

How do I export my contacts from Apollo? Search > People, filter to your saved list, select records, click Export, choose all or verified only, then download from Settings > Import & Exports > CSV Exports. Each record uses an export credit. Step by step at /guides/export-contacts-from-apollo.

Does PumpGTM have a contact database? No. It builds lists from live signals plus your Sales Navigator imports. That is the point, and also the limit: if you need to pull 40,000 rows by title and region, Apollo is the better tool.
